"The Say Hey Kid" spent the majority of his Major League Baseball career
as a center fielder with the New York and San Francisco Giants before
finishing with the New York Mets. Mays retired after the 1973 season
with a lifetime batting average of .302 and 660 home runs. His lifetime
total of 7,095 outfield fielding putouts remains the major league
record. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1979, his first
year of eligibility.
