Jose Abreu played in the Cuban National Series for Cienfuegos before his defection to the US in August 2013. After being granted free agency by MLB, Abreu signed with the White Sox in October 2013. Since 2013, Abreu has performed primarily as a first baseman, however he has also filled in at designated hitter for the White Sox. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2014 and is a two-time All-Star.
